
LAS VEGAS – The Gonzaga baseball team had a rough go at the West Coast Conference Tournament.
The second-seeded Zags were eliminated after two games, losing to third-seeded Saint Mary’s 14-6 on Thursday and top-seeded San Diego 16-7 on Friday at Las Vegas Ballpark.
The Zags finish their season 26-28 and will miss an NCAA berth for the third consecutive season, after making back-to-back appearances in 2021 and 2022.
GU was in trouble from the first at-bat in Las Vegas. Eddie Madrigal of Saint Mary’s hit his first of two homers on the second pitch from O’Brien Finbar (6-1) after a delayed start to Thursday’s game.
The Gaels totaled 19 hits 31 bases off of four Bulldogs pitchers. Finbar was chased after 1⅓ innings, allowing eight runs (six earned).
Friday’s game wasn’t any better.
Regular-season champion San Diego, upset by fourth-seeded Loyola Marymount Thursday, scored five runs in the first inning. The first five batters reached base on a fielding error sandwiched between four singles. Aden Howard then did damage with a three-run double.
Gonzaga starter Miles Gosztola (5-8) allowed 10 runs in 2⅔ innings. The Zags were down 16-4 before scoring three runs in the top of the ninth.
The Zags lost two straight at the WCC Tournament for the first time since 2013.
• Spokane stays alive at NWAC tourney: The Spokane Sasquatch beat the Everett Trojans 6-0 in an elimination game at the NWAC Tournament in Longview, Washington.
Joe Thornton hit a two-run single to break a scoreless tie in the seventh inning.
Spokane will play the loser of Friday’s late game between Lower Columbia and Linn-Benton in another elimination game on Saturday.
